Full Interview Process Breakdown

EY's interview process varies slightly by department and region. The following is compiled from the actual experiences of multiple candidates.

Assurance Department (Taipei Office)

Based on 2024 campus recruiting interview experiences, the Taipei office process is as follows:

Step one: English placement test

"After receiving the interview notice, there's an English placement test with 40 questions total. The questions lean toward grammar and aren't long, and overall it's not difficult." Dcard 2024 Big Four firms interview review

Step two: onsite interview (Taipei International Convention Center)

Candidates line up to check in by school name, with 7 people per table plus 2 interviewers (seated across from each other). The flow is:

  1. Self-introduction (2 minutes each)
  2. Card questions (you cannot flip them over in advance)
  3. Case discussion (each table splits into two groups, each discusses for 20 minutes then presents for 5 minutes, with paper and crayons provided)
  4. Q&A time

The whole session runs about 2 hours, and you find out whether you got the offer that same afternoon.

Assurance Department (Tainan Office)

The Tainan office uses a round-table group discussion plus individual interview format (7 people plus 2 interviewers):

The group discussion includes two questions (you can check your phone):

  1. Share a piece of news related to accountants from the past six months and its impact on the industry
  2. Situational question: "You're the owner of a membership-based restaurant and discover that the quantity and value of red wine recorded in the system differ from what you remember. What might the underlying causes be? And what risks could result?"

Common individual interview questions:

  • A brief self-introduction (⚠️ the key word is brief!)
  • Share the problem you just discussed
  • If someone in your group falls behind and delays the deadline, how would you handle it?
  • If you were the one falling behind, how would you resolve it?
  • What role do you usually play, or did you play just now? Who was the leader?
  • Do you understand the firm's ecosystem? Are you aware of the overtime situation? Can you accept business trips to mainland China?

Assurance Department (Taichung Office)

The Taichung office uses a three-on-three format (3 interviewers facing 3 candidates):

"After the self-introduction they asked some questions about it, what setbacks you've faced, whether you plan to pursue graduate school, what your strengths are, and your views on overtime. The interviewers were earnestly reviewing the materials, taking notes, and making eye contact, which made me feel their professionalism and a sense of respect." After getting home from the interview, the manager called to give the offer.

Consulting Department

Based on anonymous accounts on Interview.tw, the Consulting department usually has 2 to 3 interview rounds:

  1. HR initial screen: confirmation of basic qualifications
  2. Manager interview: about 70 minutes, with in-depth questions on your research, motivation, and relevant experience
  3. Senior manager / partner interview (for some roles): final confirmation

Interview difficulty is rated "medium," with an offer rate of about 80% (based on statistics from 645 reviews on Interview.tw).

Insights From Those Who've Been There

EY Campus Star (EYA)

Campus Star is an elite program for sophomores, accepting about 20 people each year, making it quite competitive. It has three stages:

Stage one: document review: submit an autobiography and various supporting documents

Stage two: written test

"There were seven logic questions in total, one of which was paper folding, five required arranging travel destinations in order based on conditions, and the other two required grouping based on conditions. The English handwriting test was three questions, choose two to answer, including writing an English email, describing personal traits, and 'what would you do if you won a million in the lottery.'" Stage three: group interview and team presentation

"Eight candidates facing four interviewers (3 managers plus 1 accountant). You give a one-minute self-introduction in English, and it must incorporate a randomly drawn image. There was also a raise-your-hand-to-answer-first segment: 'Why can you become a Campus Star?' and 'Recommend any one thing.'" Vocus EY Campus Star interview log

Team presentation topics included "the impact of cross-industry collaboration on the student consumer market" and "planning a barbecue party for germophobes," with each group given 15 minutes to prepare and a mutual Q&A session after presenting.

Interview Tips (Compiled From Multiple Sources)

  • Three must-prepare questions: Why audit? Why EY? How is EY different from the other Big Four?
  • Follow current events from the past six months: Group discussions almost always feature accounting/business news
  • Value the team over individual performance: Don't try to dominate the entire discussion; invite quiet group members to speak
  • Be honest about overtime: It's a reality at Big Four firms, and interviewers want to confirm you understand and can accept it
  • A short, strong self-introduction: Multiple candidates emphasized "the key is brevity!"

Who This Job Is For

Ideal Traits

  • Team spirit: The trait EY values most. Showing trust and respect for your teammates during the interview matters more than individual performance.
  • Energy and enthusiasm: The firm's pace is fast and the hours are long, so you need genuine, internal drive to carry you through the busy audit season.
  • A global perspective: EY's Greater China integration is well done, and English is a basic requirement. An interest in cross-border collaboration is a plus.
  • Logical analysis: Whether in audit, tax, or consulting, clear logical thinking and a sense for numbers are indispensable.
  • Courage and curiosity: Dare to ask questions and challenge the status quo. EY encourages young people to bring new perspectives rather than just follow orders.

Who Might Not Be a Good Fit

  • People who reject overtime: During audit busy season (January to April), hours can reach 9 to 12 per day, which is the norm at the firm
  • People who only want stability: The firm's learning curve is steep, and the first two years are very hard but also fast-growing
  • People who aren't good at teamwork: Almost all work at EY is team-based, and a lone-wolf style is hard to adapt
