Full Breakdown of the Interview Process

The Shopee summer internship interview process varies by department, but the overall structure is Online Assessment → HR Interview → Department Internal Interview → Final Interview, conducted entirely online. The following is a detailed timeline based on reports from 2025 applicants:

Stage 1: Online Assessment

The assessment lasts 60 minutes, requires the camera and microphone turned on, is entirely in English, and is divided into four sections:

  1. Numerical Reasoning
  2. Verbal Reasoning
  3. Integrated Reasoning
  4. Logical Reasoning

This test can be finished in time, so try to allocate your time well. For ones you really cannot do, guess on a question or two and move on to finish the rest, that's more practical. Source: Dcard internship board, 2025 Shopee summer internship application review

Before each section there are practice questions that are timed but not scored. It is recommended to bring your own calculator and a phone timer (the test itself has no countdown display).

Stage 2: HR Interview

The HR interview is mainly in Chinese, about 30 minutes. Common questions include:

  • Self-introduction and motivation for applying
  • Past internship experience and project details
  • Leadership experience and difficulties encountered
  • Why you chose this department
  • Cross-department communication experience
  • How you handle the fast pace and high pressure of e-commerce
  • Your feedback and observations on the Shopee app

Stage 3: Department Internal Interview (Team Internal Interview)

This stage introduces a mix of Chinese and English, so prepare an English self-introduction. The interviewer will first introduce the department's work in English, then alternate between questions:

English questions: self-introduction, past project leadership experience, team-conflict handling

Chinese questions: your internship proposal, why you chose this department over others, your understanding of Shopee's interactive marketing, and which Shopee app feature you like most

Stage 4: Final Interview

Led by the department manager, also conducted in both Chinese and English, with deeper questions:

  • Experience serving as a communication bridge
  • Takeaways from past training programs and cross-national projects
  • The difference between PM and marketing in your view
  • What systems should Shopee at minimum build for buyers (situational analysis question)
  • Explain what an API is in the simplest terms

Situational questions are the most important part of the Shopee interview. Candidates must have a deep understanding of the role they are applying for. Source: Interview.tw, Shopee Interview Question Compendium

Insider Experiences

Management Trainee Interview Experience (Global Apprentice Program)

A job seeker with neither an e-commerce nor a consulting background shared the full Shopee management-trainee interview journey. From 2,000 applicants, they went through five rounds of screening:

  1. Resume screening: received a reply within an hour of submitting
  2. Written test: 60 English multiple-choice questions (GMAT math, permutations and combinations, logical reasoning), 60 minutes
  3. Group case analysis plus HR interview: a group of 5 did a case discussion, assessing adaptability, execution speed, and customer orientation
  4. One-on-one case interview: 60-minute case analyses with senior managers, one in Chinese and one in English
  5. Final group case: 6 directors from different departments observing simultaneously

With just two weeks of self-training, even without a consulting background you can pass the rigorous screening. We often notice only our weaknesses and overlook our strengths. Source: Ina Wang, Shopee management-trainee interview review

The job seeker recommended using caseinterview.com to practice case-analysis frameworks, along with Fermi-estimation notes for estimation-type questions.

2025 Summer Internship PM Team Application Review

An NTU student shared a full interview record for a PM team interactive-marketing-feature optimization project. From application to result took about 52 days, all interviews online, and although they were not ultimately accepted, they completed every stage:

Bring a phone timer, since the test itself has no countdown. In 2024 I did not watch the time and was too nervous, leaving a full 1/4 of the questions unanswered, and I was cut at this stage. Source: Dcard internship board, 2025 Shopee summer internship application review

Key advice: before the second round, thoroughly research the Shopee app's interactive marketing features (short videos, livestreaming, mini-games) and prepare concrete user-feedback perspectives.

Who This Role Suits

  • Data-savvy talent: Shopee places a high value on data-driven decisions, and every department requires basic data-analysis ability, including Excel and SQL, with some departments requiring Python
  • Adaptable to a fast pace: e-commerce changes extremely quickly, and Shopee emphasizes a "Run Fast" company culture, requiring you to react and deliver quickly under pressure
  • A cross-department communication expert: most roles act as a bridge between different teams, translating technical language and business needs clearly
  • E-commerce product enthusiast: the interview heavily tests your observations and suggestions about Shopee app features, and people who actually use and pay attention to product details have an edge
  • Bilingual in Chinese and English: the interview alternates between Chinese and English, and daily work requires communicating with the Singapore headquarters and cross-national teams

When It Might Not Be a Good Fit

  • Unable to commit to a 9-week full-time internship (five days a week)
  • Not good at, or averse to, data-analysis work
  • Prefer a slow, stable work pace
  • Lack basic understanding of or interest in the e-commerce industry or Shopee's products
